Fire Starting: Why Every Preparedness Kit Should Include a Metal Match

Fire can mean warmth, safe drinking water, cooked food, light, signaling, and improved morale. Few survival tools provide as much value for so little weight as a metal match.

A metal match (more accurately called a magnesium fire starter) combines a block of magnesium with a ferrocerium rod—commonly called a ferro rod. The ferro rod produces a shower of extremely hot sparks when scraped with the spine (back) of a knife or another hard steel striker.

To use it, shave a small pile of magnesium onto a dry surface or directly onto your prepared tinder. Then scrape the ferro rod with firm pressure, directing the sparks into the magnesium shavings. The magnesium ignites almost instantly with an intense, short-lived flame, giving your tinder the boost it needs to catch fire.

The tool does not eliminate the need for skill. You still need dry tinder, properly prepared kindling, and a well-built fire lay—whether you prefer a teepee, log cabin, or another arrangement. Preparation always matters more than equipment. A fire starter is only as effective as the person using it.

One reason I have always favored this system is its practicality. A magnesium fire starter is compact, durable, inexpensive, and capable of thousands of ignitions. It has no fuel to evaporate, no moving parts to break, and it continues to work after getting wet as long as you wipe the ferro rod dry.

Do I like disposable lighters? Absolutely—they are fast and convenient. Do I carry waterproof matches? Certainly. Both deserve a place in a preparedness kit. But both have limitations. Lighters can fail, crack, or run out of fuel. Matches can become wet, be damaged, or eventually be used up. A quality magnesium fire starter avoids many of those weaknesses while taking up very little space.

Preparedness is rarely about finding the perfect tool. It is about choosing equipment that is versatile, dependable, and built to last. A magnesium fire starter reflects that philosophy perfectly.

Watch. Prepare. Endure.
